What I learned from Asian Games Commercial Production

When it goes to “Asian Games” commercial, my thought imagines kind of great and grande commercial. My office had been pitching for this project since November last year (2016). I just remember when I had booking for my wedding projects, I worry the schedule will overlap with Asian Games shooting schedule. In the end, after looooong pitching, we almost came around 8 times to do pitching, eventually we did shooting in the first two weeks of September 2017.

I joined the production since the first day. Starting when Mas Ipang and Romo as directios brainstorming for the idea, do pitching to client, and so on. Though I realized that I didn’t contribute that much comparing to others (director, co director, assistant director, director of photography and others), I got many great lesson learned while doing this production.

Shooting isn’t as enjoyable as watching final video

I mean when I see the final pictures, my inner voice said “oh my god, the visual is so amazing”. People should imagine that shooting for this commercial was enjoyable. Yes, I enjoy every single process the process. I enjoy travelling while doing my passion. However, I can’t ignore that shooting wasn’t that easy. Shooting with strong sunlight above you when I was in bukit Merese wasn’t that easy. Especially for me as third cam who don’t have any equipment to cut the strong sunlight in order to focus seeing viewfinder (without monitor). Waking up at 3.30 a.m because we need to arrived in location at 5 a.m. Then do shooting until 8 p.m. While we need to wake up in the next day as morning as previous day. Carrying some camera gear in your backpack or I imagine the DOP lift that big camera wasn’t that light. In addition shooting needs pressure. Directors want this, producer needs this, assistant directors want this. To achieve many things in short time, they need to strictly talking out loud. I wouldn’t say shooting for commercial isn’t as same as producing personal project or short film for students. Shooting is working. It is also full of pressure, expectation, time limit, and many more.

Thinking creatively, quicky!

Mas Ipang as director always ignites many creative ideas. They also often ask to us for getting new ideas from others. Creative thinking is all about process. It isn’t that easy but we need to assure that we are creative person whose bright creative mindset. Again and again, I am the one who often hide when Mas Ipang asked about idea. I’m still afraid or unsure that my idea as creative enough for him. I’m on the process to be the one who confidently throwing an idea.

Besides in pre-production phase, though in the shooting day, Mas Ipang often thinks “what kind of action can we add in this beautiful location?”. He forces us to think creatively, quickly. Not only about creative side, we often face the problem in the shooting day. For instance, in the D-Day unexpectedly directors want additional caucassian talent, the director ask for other locations besides location where we scouted before. We need to find the solution. Creatively and quickly. This is one of the reason, why I love shooting. Your left and right brain is practiced for improving.

Do not be satisfied easily!

In editing phase, when I see editor do colouring frames by frames. Sometimes I felt that the colour is already great enough. Moreover in online editing phase, I thought the original footages is okay. Nevertheless, both directors and director of photography hve their trained eyes. They know which one better. They know what kind of element that needs to be added in our video. One of my professional goal, having that great skill.

Making great visual needs skill and experience

I thought that making videos in great location is simple. In fact, it isn’t. When I was in Bukit Merese or in Bukit Idung Lombok. I didn’t see the perspective as great as the directors and director of photography. I see that the ambience was so so. However, through their eyes, they can do framing in great composition. Therefore the final picture is mesmerizing.

Mas Ipang told me that I need to concern in four things when I do filmmaking or photography.

The first one is action. It all about the idea, what activity or story that subject does.

The second is framing. The way we put all of object in the frame well composed. I need to be sensitive about leading lines, texture, pattern. Add the foreground in order to add depth for pictures. Picking wonderful background for pleasing the audience.

The third is art direction. This is all about the location, the wardrobe, the talent. Every single detail. Though you did great framing, when the talent isn’t great enough, wearing casual wardrobe, the mood will be casual. We need to concern with every single detail.

The fourth is lightling. When the sunlight straightly on top, everything will be flat. When the weather cloudy, everything was soft and there is no harsh highlight and shadow. The lighting obviously affects the mood.

Being great filmmakers need practice

I am the one who easily adore someone hehe. In this project, beside Mas Ipang who always give me great lesson learned, I learned a lot from the others such as Mas Erre & Juki as the co-director, Bang Ipul as director of photography and Penyok as art director. For me, they did great job in term of hard skill and soft skill in team work. Ya, to be as great as them, they need time to practice from one project to other projects. So, if you ask “how is the way to be great filmmaker?”. I think, just do it passionately and learn from one problem to other problem. Do you have another answer?

I think that’s all. I’m so happy can put my thought in this quite long blogpost hehe

You can see the final video as below. It’s just 1st version, there is supposedly the 2nd version, but still not released yet.
